Job Purpose

To provide high-quality, compassionate care and support to individuals in their own homes who require assistance due to age, illness, disability, or other reasons. The role focuses on promoting the independence, dignity, and well-being of service users in line with their personal care plans. The Care Support Assistant helps individuals maintain their quality of life through personal care, emotional support, companionship, and enabling their engagement with daily living activities. All care must be delivered in a manner that aligns with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) guidelines, Skills for Care best practices, and relevant legislation such as the Health and Social Care Act.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Caring for Service Users

Deliver services in a professional, empathetic, and responsive manner, aiming to exceed service users’ expectations and enhance their quality of life.

  • Person-Centred Approach: Customise care to align with each service user’s unique needs and preferences. Actively involve service users in decision-making processes regarding their care, ensuring that their choices and desires are respected and incorporated into their care plan. This person-centred approach fosters a supportive and empowering environment, enhancing the overall quality of care.
  • Professionalism: Uphold exemplary standards in personal conduct, appearance, and behaviour consistently. This includes presenting oneself professionally, demonstrating respect and integrity in all interactions, and adhering to ethical and organisational standards at all times. Such professionalism is crucial for creating a positive and trustworthy environment for service users and colleagues alike.

 

  1. Moving Service Users
  • Assisting with Safe Transfers: Support service users as they transition between locations within their home environments, following safe manual handling procedures and ensuring comfort throughout. Use equipment such as hoists and transfer aids correctly and safely.
  • Adaptation to Care Settings: Help service users become familiar with different care situations (e.g., from bed to chair), providing emotional support during transitions to reduce anxiety and promote confidence.
  • Person-Centred Movement: Employ personalised moving and handling techniques tailored to individual mobility needs, risk assessments, and preferences, ensuring the service user’s dignity and autonomy are respected throughout.
  1. Service User Comfort and Mobility
  • Positioning for Physical Comfort: Assist service users in adjusting their positions to prevent discomfort, pressure sores, or ulcers, adhering strictly to health and safety guidelines.
  • Facilitating Mobility: Encourage and support service users in maintaining mobility by assisting with gentle exercises or using mobility aids such as walkers, wheelchairs, or frames. Ensure all mobility aids are used in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and safety protocols.
  • Preparing Service Users for Movement: Prepare service users and their environment in line with health and safety protocols before any lifting or moving, ensuring all potential hazards are identified and mitigated.
  1. Personal Care Support
  • Personal Hygiene and Grooming: Assist service users with bathing, showering, oral hygiene, grooming, and dressing while respecting their dignity and privacy at all times. Follow infection prevention and control guidelines during all personal care activities.
  • Toileting Support: Enable service users to use toilet facilities, manage continence needs, and maintain personal hygiene, promoting independence and dignity.
  • Nutritional Assistance: Assist service users in choosing appropriate food and drink options based on dietary requirements and preferences. Help with meal preparation and feeding when necessary, promoting adequate hydration and nutrition.
  • Physical Comfort: Minimise service users’ discomfort and pain by ensuring proper positioning, providing cushions or supports, administering basic first aid if trained and required, and assisting with pain management strategies as outlined in the care plan.
  1. Well-Being and Mental Health Support
  • Emotional Support: Provide empathetic emotional support and companionship, helping to alleviate feelings of isolation or loneliness. Engage in conversations and activities that are meaningful to the service user.
  • Promoting Dignity and Respect: Uphold service users’ rights and dignity at all times, fostering an environment of respect, kindness, and inclusivity. Support their choices and preferences in all aspects of care.
  • Cognitive Stimulation: Assist service users with mental and social activities such as reading, puzzles, or hobbies to help maintain or improve cognitive function and emotional well-being.
  1. Safeguarding and Protection
  • Promoting Safety: Identify and minimise potential risks of abuse, neglect, or harm. Immediately report any concerns following Optimum Care’s safeguarding policies and procedures, in line with the Care Act 2014.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: Observe and document changes in the behaviour, mood, or health of service users. Communicate these changes promptly to the relevant healthcare professionals or the Registered Manager.
  • Protection from Abuse: Actively contribute to preventing, identifying, and responding to suspected or confirmed abuse, adhering to CQC’s safeguarding guidelines and company policies.

 

  1. Infection Control and Health & Safety
  • Infection Prevention: Adhere to infection control protocols, including effective hand hygiene, correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe disposal of waste and sharps, to prevent the spread of healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs).
  • Accident and Incident Reporting: Promptly report all accidents, incidents, or near misses to the Registered Manager. Complete all necessary documentation accurately and in a timely manner, following health and safety protocols.
  • Safe Environments: Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic home environment for service users by performing cleaning tasks, identifying potential hazards, and ensuring safe storage of equipment and supplies.
  • Emergency Response: Respond appropriately to emergencies, such as health crises or accidents, including providing basic life support (CPR) if trained and necessary, and contacting emergency services promptly.
  1. Communication and Confidentiality
  • Effective Communication: Communicate clearly and sensitively with service users, their families, and other healthcare professionals. Use active listening skills, empathetic responses, and maintain a professional and compassionate tone.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate, clear, and up-to-date records of care provided, observations, and any significant occurrences, in line with Optimum Care’s policies and GDPR requirements.
  • Confidentiality: Uphold strict confidentiality regarding personal information of service users, colleagues, and company matters, in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and company policies on data protection. Ensure that all personal data is stored securely and shared only with authorised individuals.

Infection Prevention and Control

Follow all infection prevention and control policies to minimise the risk of spreading infections, complying with The Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014.

  • Hand Hygiene: Practice effective hand hygiene before and after all care activities.
  • Use of PPE: Wear appropriate PPE for all tasks requiring it and dispose of it safely after use.
  • Environmental Cleanliness: Ensure the service user’s environment is kept clean and hygienic.

Smoking Policy

Optimum Care operates a smoke-free policy in all service users’ homes and workplaces. Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, is not permitted during working hours or on service user premises.

 

Safeguarding the Welfare of Service Users

All employees have a duty to safeguard vulnerable adults as outlined in the Care Act 2014 and CQC’s Regulation 13.

  • Training: Attend mandatory safeguarding training and keep knowledge up-to-date.
  • Reporting: Immediately report any concerns or suspicions of abuse or neglect to the Registered Manager.
  • Responsiveness: Act promptly and appropriately to protect service users from harm.

Clinical Governance and Best Practice

Rehabilitation of Offenders Act

This position is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required.
